Have you been living in your home for awhile? Maybe it’s new to you but you just don’t know what to do with the space? Renovating a home can be a very daunting task and can be a stress for some people. Finding the perfect floor is no exception.
We have created 5 steps to make it easier for you to prepare to turn your house into your dream home.
- Create a list of needs and order of importance
There are a lot of areas in the home that could use a little refreshing. Create a list of all these spaces and potentially what you would like to do. Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Once you have created your list, take into consideration the importance of those projects. Here’s an example, if the carpet is stained in the family room but you may have a leaky toilet in the bathroom. You may want to focus on the leaky toilet prior to the carpet so nothing gets damaged further in your home. - What is your budget?
You’ve made your list above and dreamed a little. Now, let’s get real. What budget do you have to work with in order to renovate your home? Some rooms and projects can be more than others. Some you can do yourself, others you will need to call in the professionals. Weigh the priorities you created above with what best fits your budget. Perhaps, create a renovation fund or savings plan that you won’t touch for a while in order to complete your projects. You can also research what each project may cost in order to plan a little further. - Research Reliable Companies
There are a lot of companies out there that can complete home renovation projects of different degrees. It’s very important to do your research and shop around when purchasing big ticket items like this. Consider asking friends and family about their experiences, referrals, reviews, Houzz, Yellow Pages are great places to start. Even visit their own website and if you don’t see a portfolio of work, ask! Always ensure that what you have in mind is something they are capable of doing. Shop around for different estimates. - Hire a Reputable Company
Don’t always select your company based on price. These are a few more factors that you should consider: quality of work, the number of employees they have to complete the job, online reviews, timeline for them to complete the work, how they communicate etc. - Develop a Plan
Construction is messy. No matter how big or little a project you are doing, things will get dusty. With the mess comes with planning on if you are able to move a portion of your home to another space so you can remain in the home during the renovation process or if you will need to relocate for a period of time. If it’s the latter, you will want to ensure that the company you selected can commit to a timeline so you aren’t displaced for a long period of time.
